The Assumption School
The
Assumption
School
opened for instruction in September, 1910 with an enrollment of 585 students in
grades 1-6. In 1911, grade 7 opened and by September, 1912, Assumption served
700 students in grades 1-8. The Sisters of Mercy staffed the 16 classroom
building from it's inception until 1984.
Today, with an all lay faculty, The Assumption
School offers an education program that is fully accredited by the New England Association
of Schools and Colleges. The accreditation was renewed in May, 2007
for ten years. Presently, The Assumption
School
consists of Pre-kindergarten (3 and 4 year olds), a full day kindergarten, and
grades 1 - 8. ACCENT (a before and after school child care program) is
available to working parents.
The Assumption School
provides a quality Catholic education. In keeping with the tradition of
The
Assumption
School, the athletic program includes boys and girls basketball teams and a
cheerleading squad. During the 1970's, 80's and 90's the basketball teams and
cheerleading squads earned championships in the city grammar school league,
state and
New England
tournaments.
The religious dimension of the school is apparent in such programs and events as
the Big Brother/Big Sister program; daily prayer services, a youth choir,
and student geared liturgies. The
ever present co-pastors promote strong Christian values as does the Director of
Spirituality.
Extra-curricular activities offered to the students in
The
Assumption
School
include an active student council, Cager newspaper staff, yearbook committee,
peer tutoring, and library assistants. The spiritual, intellectual, moral,
physical, and social growth of
The
Assumption
School
remains to be the focus of its well-rounded education. It is a Christian
community that regards the curriculum as value-centered, and supports the total
human realization of each person.
The
Assumption School's motto is: Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve.
The
Principal of The Assumption School, Kathleen Molner, was awarded the
Distinguished Elementary School Principal Award from the Archdiocese of Hartford
for 2006-2007 and the Dr. Robert J. Kealey Distinguished Principal Award from
the National Catholic Education Association for 2006-2007.
